Outrage Erupts: 100+ Writers Condemn Hypocrisy in JCB Literature Prize Amid Bulldozer Demolitions
Over a hundred prominent writers, translators, and publishers have signed an open letter condemning the ‘JCB Prize for Literature’, accusing its funder, the British construction company JCB, of hypocrisy. They allege JCB’s equipment is being used in India and Palestine to carry out destructive activities against marginalized groups. The letter highlights that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government employs JCB machinery in what has been termed “bulldozer justice” to demolish Muslim homes and places of worship across India. JCB equipment is also reportedly used in the Occupied Palestinian Territories for demolitions and settlement expansion, exacerbating the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Signatories, including renowned poet K. Satchidanandan and Palestinian novelist Isabella Hammad, criticize JCB for seemingly promoting diverse literature while allegedly contributing to the destruction of communities. They argue the prize cannot overshadow JCB’s alleged role in these demolitions, urging that India’s emerging writers deserve better. The open letter, released just days before the JCB Prize announcement, emphasizes the irony of JCB’s association with a prestigious literary award while its machinery is used in acts of oppression in India. The writers call for a stand against what they describe as JCB’s “disingenuous” support for literature and underline the importance of speaking out against the company’s alleged human rights violations.
This protest not only raises questions about corporate sponsorships in literature but also intensifies the spotlight on the socio-political dynamics within India and the global stage.
