Panaji (Goa), Nov 19: The 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) is launching in Goa from November 20 to 28, seeking to elevate its global profile. Hosted by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, along with the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) and the Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG), this year’s IFFI emphasizes young filmmakers as the theme for 2024, highlighting their role in shaping future creativity.
Union Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs, L Murugan, equated IFFI’s significance with prestigious festivals like Cannes. The festival aims to support young talent through its enhanced ‘Creative Minds of Tomorrow’ platform, which now backs 100 young filmmakers, up from 75. Additionally, 400 film students are sponsored to attend, enriching the event’s educational scope. A new award, Best Debut Indian Director, has been introduced to recognize emerging filmmakers.
IFFI 2024 will feature masterclasses, panel discussions, and film markets designed for young creators. It also includes tributes to cinematic legends, offering special exhibitions and segments. Festival director Shekhar Kapur highlighted the critical role of storytelling, describing it as the core of cinema, vital in an ever-changing world.
The festival has attracted 1,676 submissions from 101 countries, showcasing IFFI’s rising international stature. This edition will screen over 180 international films from 81 countries, with 15 world premieres, 3 international premieres, 40 Asian premieres, and 106 Indian premieres. Australia is the featured Country of Focus, offering a dedicated film package and significant representation. A Memorandum of Understanding between Screen Australia and NFDC will promote collaboration, accompanied by a showcase from AusFilm, highlighting Australia’s distinctive filming locations and co-productions.
IFFI 2024 promises a comprehensive cinematic experience, underlining the enduring importance of storytelling in global cinema.
