Thrilling Breakthrough: Mizoram Sports Minister Engages Union Minister on Olympic Dreams and Sports Transformation
Lalnghinglova Hmar, Mizoram’s Minister of State for Sports and Youth Services, recently met with Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, in New Delhi to discuss pivotal sports developments in Mizoram. The dialogue emphasized the state’s key role in India’s aspiration to host the 2036 Olympic Games, with Hmar underscoring Mizoram’s contribution to the national sports arena. Notably, Mizoram is proactively preparing by organizing the Mizoram Sports Conclave scheduled for June 13-14, 2024, to promote regional sports activities.
Hmar introduced the “Bana Kaih (Handholding)” scheme, intended to enhance coaching and training facilities for young athletes in Mizoram. The discussions also touched upon concerns regarding the limited sports budget allocation for Mizoram, with Hmar advocating for a revamp of the state’s sports infrastructure. He appealed to Dr. Mandaviya for increased funding sources, suggesting financial involvement from corporate entities and public sector undertakings (PSUs).
In response, Dr. Mandaviya commended Mizoram’s sporting initiatives and acknowledged the untapped potential within the state. He committed to prioritizing investment in sports infrastructure to enhance Mizoram’s facilities. Additionally, Dr. Mandaviya proposed convening a joint meeting with sports ministers across the nation and PSUs, advocating a “one State-one PSU” model to streamline and boost national sports development initiatives.
The meeting was also attended by Pi Sumita Dawra, Secretary of the Ministry of Labour and Employment, and key officials from Mizoram’s sports department, including John Tanpuia, Director of LESDE, and H. Lalramenga, PS. This collaborative effort marks a significant step in advancing Mizoram’s sporting aspirations and fostering a robust sports environment in India.
