EXCLUSIVE: Rakesh Roshan Unveils Dramatic Twist – Distributors Abandon ‘Karan Arjun’ Post Ajay Devgn’s Exit: ‘Romantic Heroes?’ Dilemma in Action!
As the iconic film Karan Arjun is re-released, filmmaker Rakesh Roshan reminisced about its journey in an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama. The 1995 blockbuster, known for its memorable scenes, dialogues, and music, originally had a different casting in mind. Initially, Ajay Devgn and Shah Rukh Khan were set to star in the titular roles, with Devgn playing Karan and Khan as Arjun. However, both actors expressed a desire to swap roles, wanting to explore different facets of their acting skills.
Rakesh Roshan, however, believed that keeping the original casting intact was crucial for the film’s success. He argued that the intended combination of action and romance would play well to both actors’ strengths. Despite their persistence, Roshan eventually turned to Salman Khan and Aamir Khan for the roles. A twist in fate resulted in Salman Khan collaborating with Shah Rukh Khan instead, which turned out to be a defining choice for the film.
The casting switch was not without its challenges. Distributors were initially apprehensive, considering Salman and Shah Rukh as romantic heroes rather than action stars. However, Roshan saw their potential for action, convinced of their physical abilities to carry the film’s demanding scenes.
At the time, Salman Khan’s career featured romantic hits such as Hum Aapke Hain Koun! and Andaz Apna Apna, while Shah Rukh Khan was known for anti-hero roles in films like Darr and Anjaam. Despite challenges, Karan Arjun emerged as a cinematic triumph, also benefiting from a strong supporting cast including Rakhee, Amrish Puri, and Mamta Kulkarni.
Roshan shared that these casting decisions and challenges added depth to the film, ultimately contributing to its enduring legacy. The re-release celebrates not just the film’s success but also the bold choices that crafted its iconic status.
