Outrage in Maharashtra: Gig Workers Overlooked in Party Election Manifestos | Pune News

As Maharashtra prepares for Assembly elections, the state’s growing gig workforce feels largely ignored by political parties, with none addressing their needs in election manifestos. Despite their significant economic contributions, gig workers demand better working conditions, social security, and protection from exploitation by platform companies. According to a NITI Aayog report, India’s gig workforce is expected to reach 23.5 million by 2029-30, with a considerable number in Maharashtra.

Nisha Pawar, in charge of the women-led Gig and Platforms Service Workers Union (GIPSWU), highlighted the vulnerability of women and single mother gig workers. Citing the recent death of a gig worker in Telangana allegedly due to company retaliation, she called for immediate governmental intervention to prevent such tragedies and ensure social security for women workers. “This is about life and death now,” Pawar emphasized, pointing to the urgent need for vigilance over app-based companies.

Sainath J from the All India Gig Workers Union (AIGWU) in Pune stressed the necessity of classifying gig workers as employees under labor laws. He called for socio-economic reforms including pensions, minimum wages, and the establishment of a welfare board. Additionally, providing subsidized electric bikes and charging points could enhance gig workers’ financial stability and reduce pollution.

Keshav Kshirsagar of the India Gig Workers Front criticized political leaders for not addressing gig workers’ issues and advocated for a state-level Gig Workers’ Act, echoing initiatives in states like Rajasthan and Karnataka. Despite the Regional Transport Authority’s (RTA) revised fare guidelines, compliance remains spotty, raising legal questions as Pune’s app-based companies continue to operate without official permits.

The precarious status of gig workers in Maharashtra highlights a significant oversight that political parties may need to address beyond the election cycle, possibly through judicial means if not legislative reform.
