Punjab Police Triumphs: Mastermind Cyber Fraudsters from Assam Captured in Landmark Digital Arrest
Punjab Police have apprehended two men from Assam, Najrul Ali and Midul Ali, over their alleged role in a significant “digital fraud” operation, officials reported on Monday. The duo is accused of cyber scams where fraudsters impersonate law enforcement officials to extort money by convincing victims they have committed a serious crime, dubbed “Digital Arrest.”
The case unraveled when a 76-year-old retired government officer reported being defrauded of Rs 76 lakh. The scammers, posing as Mumbai Cyber Crime officials, persuaded him he was involved in money laundering and claimed a subpoena had been issued by the Bombay High Court. They convinced him to transfer money into various bank accounts to clear his name.
An FIR was lodged, sparking an investigation that unveiled the accused’s involvement in at least 11 other cyber fraud cases across seven states, totaling around Rs 15 crore. Details from bank and WhatsApp accounts traced the operation back to remote Assam districts, while calls originated from Cambodia and Hong Kong.
Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Cybercrime Division V Neeraja disclosed that a Punjab Cyber Crime team traveled to Assam last week, arresting Najrul and Midul. Najrul allegedly siphoned off funds, while Midul facilitated bank account openings with his documents. Both suspects have been moved to Mohali for interrogation.
The investigation continues, with summonses issued to bank officials who assisted in opening the accused’s accounts. Authorities are delving deeper into the network’s operations to dismantle the digital fraud ring completely.
The case highlights the need for vigilance against sophisticated cybercrime tactics preying on fear and impersonation. Punjab Police’s swift action showcases their commitment to tackling digital fraud and safeguarding citizens’ interests.
