Experience the Spectacular Winter Migration: Pobitora Sanctuary’s Enchanting Avian Delight
Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam is experiencing a rise in migratory bird arrivals with the onset of winter. Birds from Europe, America, and the Tibetan region are making their way to the sanctuary, with the migration beginning in late October and expected to peak in December. Pranjal Baruah, a Forest Ranger at Pobitora, emphasized the sanctuary’s commitment to bird protection, highlighting the establishment of 25 anti-poaching camps and regular patrols.
This annual migration is also attracting a growing number of tourists. Between October 14 and November 15, approximately 4,000 visitors, both domestic and international, toured the sanctuary, bringing in ₹5 lakh in revenue. With the availability of elephant and jeep safaris, officials anticipate an even higher influx of tourists during the peak migration period.
Last year, Pobitora recorded 69 species of migratory birds, and officials are hopeful for an increase in diversity this season. The sanctuary’s enhanced monitoring and protection efforts aim to ensure a safe haven for these avian visitors while boosting tourism in the region.
