The National People’s Party (NPP) has officially withdrawn its support from the BJP-led government in Manipur, citing the administration’s inability to resolve the escalating crisis in the state. This decision was announced on Sunday and is effective immediately. Conrad K. Sangma, the NPP national president, expressed grave concern in a letter to the BJP’s national president, Jagat Prakash Nadda, about the deteriorating law and order situation and the increasing loss of innocent lives.
The Manipur government, under Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, has faced criticism for failing to restore peace and normalcy amid ongoing unrest. Despite the NPP’s decision to pull out, the government’s stability remains intact. The BJP holds an absolute majority with 32 legislators in the 60-member Manipur assembly and has additional support from five Naga People’s Front (NPF) MLAs and six representatives from the Janata Dal (United).
The NPP’s exit mirrors the earlier withdrawal by the Kuki People’s Alliance (KPA), following the ethnic violence that erupted in the state. Formed before the 2022 Manipur election, the KPA also withdrew its support from the BJP-led government, indicating a growing discontent among political allies regarding the current administration’s handling of the crisis.
This development underscores the mounting political challenges for the BJP in Manipur, as the situation has significantly worsened in recent days, leading to increased suffering among the populace. The NPP, which holds seven seats in the assembly, called the move a necessary step in light of the government’s failures. The decision highlights the fragile alliances within the state’s political landscape as ethnic tensions continue to simmer.
