Assam Unites for Nature: 2nd Edition of Amrit Brikshya Andolan Sparks Major Forest Revival!
Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal recently announced significant strides in land reclamation and reforestation efforts across Assam. Addressing concerns over erosion and flooding from the Bogi River to Matmara, a substantial area of forest land has been reclaimed from the Brahmaputra River. The Mising Council is spearheading reforestation endeavors, pushing forward plans to officially designate this reclaimed land as a forest reserve.
Further steps include the eviction of encroachers from Kabu Chapori in Dhemaji, with plans to declare this area a forest reserve as well. Similarly, in Goalpara, previously occupied lands earmarked for reserve forests are being cleared. These eviction efforts are part of a broader initiative to convert these areas into reserve forests.
Highlighting the success of these efforts, CM Sonowal shared that approximately 10,000 hectares of forest land have been reclaimed over the past three years. This initiative not only addresses environmental concerns but also underscores Assam’s commitment to preserving and expanding its forest reserves.
The ongoing reforestation efforts, combined with the successful recovery and conversion of lands, represent a major milestone in Assam’s environmental conservation strategy. The designation of new forest reserves is poised to enhance the state’s ecological health and biodiversity, while also mitigating the impacts of natural disasters.
