Crushing Workload and Tyrannical Supervisors Fuel Employee Misery at Ernakulam Civil Station
Employees’ Happiness Survey Unveiled at Ernakulam Civil Station
A recent happiness survey conducted by the district office of the Department of Economics and Statistics reveals that employees at the Ernakulam civil station are generally content, though not exceptionally so. The findings, released by District Collector N.S.K. Umesh in Kochi on July 19, scored an overall happiness rating of 3.55 out of 5.
The survey, which involved a random selection of at least 20% of employees from all 37 offices at the civil station, aimed to ensure balanced representation by including 30% gazetted officers and 70% non-gazetted officers. The survey assessed eight key indicators including communication, job security, working conditions, and physical health.
Interestingly, the Department of Factories and Boilers scored the highest in employee happiness with a remarkable 4.5, while the District Social Justice Office lagged behind with a score of 2. Employment categories showed varied happiness levels, with gazetted officers and heads of offices reporting 66.67% and 65.22% happiness or very happiness levels. Conversely, non-gazetted staff and supervisory officers registered lower happiness levels, with 51.28% and 49.98%, respectively.
Employees cited colleague cooperation (69.96%), job security (62.55%), and societal recognition (53.09%) as primary happiness contributors. However, workload (26.34%), strict supervision (19.34%), and lack of work freedom (17.28%) emerged as significant dissatisfaction factors. Notably, 95% of employees believe that managerial responsibility is crucial for ensuring happiness. Key stressors identified included lack of training (16.05%) and personal problems (14.81%).
Correlation analysis indicated strong links between job satisfaction and mental health (0.50), as well as promotion opportunities (0.45). Additionally, physical and mental health were closely connected (0.73).
The report concluded with recommendations for improvement, advocating for better communication, enhanced job security, improved working conditions, and greater recognition for work. Addressing these aspects is deemed vital for boosting overall job satisfaction and organisational efficiency.
