In an emerging conflict within the Voice of the People Party (VPP), North Shillong MLA Adelbert Nongrum has voiced concerns over the party’s alleged favoritism following the announcement of candidates for the upcoming KHADC and JHADC polls. On Saturday, Nongrum criticized the party’s decision to field Strong Pillar Kharjana in the Mawkhar-Pynthorumkhrah constituency, questioning the integrity of VPP’s political practices. “Is this clean politics you are talking about?” Nongrum challenged, referencing the party’s usual stance against favoritism in local administration.
Nongrum expressed frustration over being sidelined despite his position as an MLA, claiming he was not consulted during candidate selection by the State Executive Committee (SEC). He revealed that Kharjana had initially shown interest in contesting from the Jaiaw constituency but was instead nominated for a different seat, raising questions about internal decisions.
The MLA compared the process to an exam debacle, highlighting procedural discrepancies. Known for his candidness, Nongrum stated his dedication to his constituents, whom he has represented for 17 years, both as an MLA and MDC, and stressed his obligation to honesty.
Following the controversy, Nongrum chose to refrain from further comments on the ADC elections after receiving guidance from the party. Meanwhile, VPP spokesperson Batskhem Myrboh indicated that any discussions or clarifications regarding the situation should stem from the constituency’s electorate.
The discord comes on the heels of VPP announcing a roster of 27 candidates for the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council polls and 24 candidates for the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council polls, scheduled for the upcoming year. As internal dissensions surface, the handling of these grievances could significantly impact the party’s image and electoral strategies in the region.
