India Stands United: All Indian Nationals Safe Amid Bangladesh Anti-Quota Protests – EAM Jaishankar Ensures Vigilant Monitoring
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has confirmed that all Indian nationals residing in Bangladesh are safe amidst significant protests against the country’s quota system. Speaking at a press conference on Friday, July 19, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal mentioned that the ministry is closely monitoring the situation and maintaining contact with the 8,500 Indian students and approximately 15,000 Indian residents in Bangladesh.
The protests, which have turned violent, have resulted in at least 39 deaths and hundreds of injuries. The demonstrations center around demands to reform Bangladesh’s quota system for civil service positions, which currently reserves 30% of jobs for descendants of 1971 war of independence veterans. Protesters argue that this system unfairly benefits certain groups.
The Indian government has issued a travel advisory, urging Indian nationals in Bangladesh to stay indoors and limit travel as the situation escalates. Authorities in Bangladesh have implemented restrictions on internet access, mobile services, and public gatherings to control the unrest.
The MEA, along with the High Commission and Assistant High Commissions, has assured that they are available for any assistance needed by Indian nationals, highlighting helpline numbers for immediate support. Updates will be regularly provided by both the External Affairs Minister and the High Commission.
In response to the unrest, security measures have been bolstered at the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi to prevent any protests from occurring outside the Commission’s premises.
The situation remains volatile, with the Indian government committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens in Bangladesh.
