Transformative Study Reveals Life-Changing Impact of Nutritional Intervention for Diabetes in Greater Chennai’s Four Zones
A new study by the Indian Council of Medical Research-National Institute of Epidemiology (ICMR-NIE), in collaboration with the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), is examining the benefits of dietary education on diabetes management. Conducted in four zones of Chennai—Tondiarpet, Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar, Valasarvakkam, and Adyar—the study targets individuals with diabetes who have an HbA1c level of 6.5 and above and seeks to determine if educating them on nutrition, particularly a low carbohydrate diet, could help in controlling blood sugar levels. The year-long cluster randomized controlled trial, backed by the Union Health Ministry, will also explore self-care practices.
As part of this research, some participants will be equipped with continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices to track and manage blood sugar spikes in real-time. This cutting-edge technology aims to deepen understanding of the effects of various foods on blood sugar levels, allowing for more tailored dietary recommendations. The study’s dietary advice advocates for a balanced intake: half plate of fruits and vegetables, a quarter of proteins, and a remaining quarter of complex carbohydrates and healthy fats.
Dr. Joshua Chadwick, leading the project, emphasizes that these strategies will enable participants to report dietary impacts via digital channels, facilitating weekly reviews. Manoj Murhekar, director of ICMR-NIE, underscores the role of medication adherence, regular sugar monitoring, and lifestyle factors like proper sleep and physical activity in effective diabetes management. The research seeks not only to improve individual health outcomes but also to influence public policy by considering innovative measures such as integrating increased protein options into the Public Distribution System. Findings from this study are expected to offer crucial insights into diabetes management and potential policy adaptations.
