Manipur Turmoil Erupts: Protesters Boldly Target CM Biren Singh’s Residence
Amid growing unrest in Manipur, demonstrators attempted to storm the home of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh in Heingang, Imphal East district. However, a strong security presence prevented the protestors from coming within 500 meters of the residence. The protests were primarily fueled by anger over the recent Jiribam incident, which has intensified public discontent. In addition to the Chief Minister’s residence, demonstrators have targeted the homes of various state ministers and MLAs statewide, vandalizing properties in expressions of frustration and defiance.
The escalating violence in Manipur has heightened tensions, posing significant challenges for authorities trying to restore order. As part of their efforts, prohibitory orders and internet suspensions remain enforced across affected districts. Calls for government accountability and decisive action are increasing amid the crisis. Compounding the complex and volatile situation, the Manipur government has urged the central government to reconsider and withdraw the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) from affected areas.
AFSPA, criticized for granting extensive powers to armed forces, was reimposed on November 14 in several jurisdictions, including Sekmai and Lamsang in Imphal West, Lamlai in Imphal East, Moirang in Bishnupur, Leimakhong in Kangpokpi, and Jiribam district. Its reimplementation has only fueled protestor anger, with many viewing it as a measure that worsens the crisis rather than addressing the underlying issues of discontent.
The current unrest stems from ongoing grievances over governance and perceived inaction regarding hostage deaths, highlighting a broader dissatisfaction with the state’s administration. This is a developing story, and further updates are anticipated as the situation evolves.
