Arunachal Minister’s Urgent Plea: Embrace Ethical Journalism for a Responsible Media Future
On November 16, Arunachal Pradesh’s Information and Public Relations Minister Nyato Dukam underscored the necessity for a responsible media landscape, emphasizing the adherence to ethical standards among journalists to ensure accurate information reaches the public. Speaking at the National Press Day event held at the Arunachal Press Club in Itanagar, Dukam highlighted that the media serves as a vital source of information and knowledge, essential for the state’s progression.
Dukam advocated for media professionals to perform their duties with sincerity and integrity, stressing the media’s role in spotlighting critical issues, defending truth, and educating citizens for shaping Arunachal Pradesh’s future. He called for the establishment of a system to distinguish genuine media outlets from those spreading misinformation, particularly targeting the credibility concerns arising from newer digital platforms.
“A regulatory body is needed to authenticate media outlets,” Dukam stated, noting that the state government has empowered the APC and the Arunachal Pradesh Union of Working Journalists to undertake this effort. He promised government backing to the media community, announcing plans to finalize an advertisement policy for electronic and digital media by December and to implement a journalist pension scheme soon.
In a supporting address, Health and Family Welfare Minister Biyuram Wahge urged journalists to remain dedicated to the state’s development. He emphasized media’s strategic role in disseminating information regarding government actions and the necessity of truthful reporting. Wahge also highlighted the increasing cancer cases in the region, calling on the media to raise awareness about the issue.
APC President Dodum Yangfo commended the government’s support, while APUWJ President Amar Sangno reflected on the significance of National Press Day. The event honored several journalists with the V Ravindran Excellence Award for print media and the Taro Chatung Excellence Award for electronic media, recognizing their contributions.
