Urgent: Curfew Enforced and Internet Shutdown in Manipur Amid Escalating Tensions
In a swift response to escalating law and order concerns, the District Magistrate of Imphal West, Th. Kirankumar, has imposed an immediate curfew across the district, revoking earlier plans to ease restrictions on Saturday, November 16. Originally, residents were set to enjoy movement from 5:00 AM to 8:00 PM; however, worsening security conditions led to the reinstatement of a stringent curfew starting at 4:30 PM, which will continue indefinitely.
Certain sectors are exempted from the curfew orders. Personnel involved in essential services—such as healthcare, electricity, public distribution, petroleum, municipal services, the judiciary, and the media—are allowed to continue their duties. Additionally, travel to and from the airport remains unaffected for passengers and workers possessing valid Airport Entry Permits.
In a parallel move to stabilize the situation, the Manipur Home Department has taken decisive action against misinformation and potential agitation incited through digital platforms. Reports of hate speech, false rumors, and incitements to violence during the current unrest have prompted the state government to suspend all internet and mobile data services, including broadband and VPN services, across several districts. This suspension affects Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, Kangpokpi, and Churachandpur districts for a duration of two days, coming into effect at 5:15 PM on November 16. However, government offices and select areas remain exempt from this ban.
This measure has been executed under the Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services (Public Emergency or Public Safety) Rules, 2017, emphasizing the government’s commitment to maintaining peace and ensuring public safety amidst emerging tensions. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, aiming to restore normalcy and ensure the safety of all residents in the affected regions.
