Urgent Plea: Mizo Students Champion Safety for Meiteis Amidst Rising Tensions in Mizoram
The Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), Mizoram’s largest student organization, has urged the Mizoram government to safeguard the Meitei community living in the state, advising them to take precautionary measures for their safety. This call to action by the MZP came following an emergency meeting where they expressed concerns over potential escalations of tension due to prevailing sorrow and anger among the Mizoram public. They emphasized the need for Mizoram authorities to proactively prevent any incidents that could threaten the safety of Meiteis in the region.
Moreover, the MZP has appealed to the Central Government to ensure the safety of Mizo students in Imphal, as they have lost confidence in the Manipur government’s ability to protect them. The student body warned that any harm to Mizo students would lead to holding both state and central governments accountable, underscoring their commitment to treating such matters with utmost seriousness.
The student organization also criticized the delays in conducting post-mortem examinations and the Indian and Manipur governments’ decisions to transport the deceased via helicopter against the wishes of the Zo community. This act, they claim, hindered many from paying final respects, exacerbating the grief and resentment within the Zo community.
Furthermore, the MZP stressed that Mizoram residents stand in solidarity with the Zo people in Manipur, condemning the actions of Meitei extremists. They demanded that, unless the Manipur government can control such violence, the central government should relocate educational seats allocated to Mizoram students from Imphal to institutions outside Manipur.
The MZP remains committed to closely monitoring the situation in Manipur, standing in unwavering solidarity with the Zo community and sharing in their sorrow during these trying times.
