In a laudable initiative, BJP MLA Sushanta Deb from Tripura marked his birthday by adopting a Royal Bengal Tiger at the Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary and Zoo. The tiger, named Shera, has been residing in the zoo for seven months since arriving from North Bengal. Deb has committed to covering Shera’s expenses for food, medication, and other necessities for the next three months under the zoo’s animal adoption policy.
Deb explained his decision, stating, “My lifelong passion for social work drives me to make a positive impact. Animals need care and compassion, and protecting them is vital for environmental balance. This motivated me to adopt Shera and celebrate my birthday at Sepahijala Zoo.” To formalize the adoption, Deb followed the necessary procedures and secured a three-month permit to care for Shera.
Zoo Director Biswajit Das highlighted the initiative’s significance, pointing out that the annual cost of caring for Shera is approximately Rs 7.70 lakh. Deb’s adoption will cover around Rs 2 lakh for the tiger’s needs over the next three months. Das noted that while the MLA initially faced some administrative challenges, approval was eventually granted by the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and the Chief Wildlife Warden. He expressed gratitude to Deb for his contribution and encouraged others to participate in the animal adoption program, which began five years ago and directly supports the zoo’s animal care efforts.
Deb also appealed to the community to collectively foster a balanced and compassionate environment for all living beings. His actions set a commendable precedent, underlining the importance of wildlife conservation in maintaining ecological harmony.
