Chaos Unleashed: Tension Peaks in Rajasthan’s Tonk After Shocking Polling-Booth Assault
A significant unrest unfolded on November 14 in Samravata village, Deoli-Uniara assembly constituency, following an alleged assault on Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Amit Chaudhary by Independent candidate Naresh Meena at a polling station. This incident ignited widespread chaos, culminating in violent clashes, stone-pelting, and arson.
Supporters of Naresh Meena reportedly clashed with law enforcement, resulting in the destruction of several vehicles, some of which were set on fire. Ajmer Range Inspector General of Police, Om Prakash, stated that at least 60 individuals linked to the disturbances were arrested. The tension escalated when Meena allegedly slapped SDM Chaudhary, sparking the violence as police attempted to detain him. “Stone pelting and arson occurred late into the night during the arrest attempt,” Prakash reported, noting that numerous vehicles, including police cars, were torched. Additional police forces were dispatched to restore order.
Naresh Meena, in response to the allegations, accused the district collector and Superintendent of Police of instigating the unrest. Defending the arrested as innocent, he declared, “If anyone should be punished, it should be me.” On social media, Meena posted defiantly, stating, “I am fine, I am not scared and will never be, will inform about further plans.”
The violence caused notable property damage, with eight four-wheelers and over two dozen two-wheelers vandalized or set ablaze. Tonk Additional SP Brijendra Singh Bhati confirmed an assessment of the damage was underway and mentioned several arrests had been made.
In an effort to curb further unrest, local officials enhanced police deployment. Tonk SP Vikas Sangwan explained that authorities had been at the polling station to address a voting boycott issue when the incident transpired. He assured that legal actions would be pursued against Naresh Meena, emphasizing that calm had been restored, allowing voting to continue peacefully.
