Furious Uproar: 21 Villages Rally Against KHADC’s Controversial Constituency Redrawing
As of November 14, 2024, tensions have risen in the Mayshynrut area of West Khasi Hills, Meghalaya, where residents from 21 villages voiced strong opposition against the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC). The protesters challenged the decision to transfer their villages from the Mawshynrut constituency to Rambrai-Jyrngam constituency. The villagers held discussions with KHADC Deputy Chief Executive Member Pynshngain N Syiem, resulting in the council’s willingness to revisit the Delimitation Bill on December 19.
Despite this reassurance, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) expressed dissatisfaction, pledging to escalate their protests if the changes are not reversed. The JAC criticized the lack of explanation for the constituency reassignment and highlighted the transportation challenges posed by Rambrai-Jyrngam’s remote location, which would affect the 2,500 voters in the area.
In a firm warning, the committee urged KHADC to reconsider the decision, implying possible consequences if their demands are unmet. This protest underscores a broader sentiment of unrest among villagers, who seek clarity and fairness in the administrative restructuring within their region.
