Ariana Grande’s Bold Correction: Setting the Record Straight on ‘Popular’ Lyrics with Passion
Ariana Grande, set to portray Glinda in the upcoming Wicked film, recently made headlines by gently correcting the film’s official social media accounts regarding an error in a "Popular" lyric video. The video mistakenly displayed the lyrics as "I’ll teach you the proper poise when you talk to boys," instead of the correct "ploys." Grande humorously addressed this in the comments, writing, "It’s ploys!!!!!! I love you @wickedmovie." Interestingly, this lyrical mix-up appears to be widespread, as even Genius lists the lyrics as "proper poise," although the original Broadway Cast Recording and Official Wicked Broadway YouTube account both use "ploys."
Entertainment Weekly has reportedly sought clarification from representatives for Stephen Schwartz, the renowned composer and lyricist responsible for Wicked’s music. However, given Grande’s longstanding relationship with the musical and original Glinda, Kristin Chenoweth, it’s reasonable to conclude she’s right. Chenoweth has been nothing but supportive, recalling her delight when Grande announced her intention to audition for the role, expressing total faith in Grande’s portrayal.
Wicked, based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel, is a prequel to the beloved Wizard of Oz and delves into the origins of the witches from Shiz University. Since its Broadway debut in 2003, the show has captivated audiences, earning 10 Tony Award nominations and winning three. "Popular," synonymous with the character Glinda, humorously extols the benefits of popularity while giving Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch, a makeover.
The film, with Grande already earning rave reviews and Oscar buzz, will be released in two parts, with the first installment scheduled for November 22nd. The star-studded cast also features Cynthia Erivo, Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum.
