Choking on Smog: National Capital Suffers Worst Air Quality Yet as Pollution Reaches ‘Severe’ Levels
Delhi Air Pollution Update: The national capital recorded its worst air quality of the season on Wednesday, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) entering the “severe” category at 418, up from 334 the previous day. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) attributed this decline to an unparalleled dense fog, labeling it an “episodic event.” If the AQI remains severe on Thursday, authorities might enforce stringent measures under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), including halting construction activities and banning certain vehicles.
However, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) anticipates a reduction in pollutant levels due to stronger winds, predicting a shift to the “very poor” category soon. On Wednesday, Delhi’s maximum temperature dropped significantly, from 32.8°C to 27.8°C, contributing to the entrapment of pollutants. The city experienced its first dense fog and lowest daytime temperature of the season, leading to zero visibility at the Indira Gandhi International Airport and flight diversions.
Vehicular emissions were the leading contributors to the pollution, alongside fine particulate matter like PM2.5 and PM10. Long-term exposure to these particles poses health risks, including an increased chance of lung cancer, as noted by experts. As Delhi faces extended periods of poor air quality, citizens are advised to remain vigilant and aware of potential health impacts, as indicated by health professionals.
According to weather forecasts, the foggy conditions are expected to persist with smoggy mornings and gradual improvements in the afternoon due to rising wind speeds. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, intending to implement GRAP Stage-III if necessary, emphasizing public health and safety.
