Unraveling Deceptive Claims: Shocking Truth Behind Hindu and Muslim Fertility Rate Myths Across Eras
A viral post on social media platform X has spread misinformation about fertility rates among religious groups in India, claiming Muslim fertility is at 4.4 compared to Hindus at 1.94. An investigation by BOOM debunked this claim, revealing that the post misleadingly used outdated data from the 1992-1993 National Family Health Survey (NFHS) for Muslims and compared it to the most recent data (2019-2021) for other religious groups. The current NFHS reports the fertility rate for Muslims is actually 2.36, while for Hindus it remains at 1.94.
The misleading comparison by the viral post was designed to exaggerate the perceived gap in fertility rates between the groups. However, an examination of past reports highlights a significant decline in Muslim fertility rates over the years, despite it still being higher than other religious communities.
This disinformation highlights the importance of using consistent and up-to-date data for accurate representations. The misrepresentation of statistical data can lead to misconceptions and fuel unwarranted social and religious tension.
