Urgent Warning: Diabetologists Reveal the Dangers of Self-Healing Methods for Diabetes Control
Diabetes poses a significant health risk and economic burden, according to specialists at the Kauvery Group of Hospitals in Tamil Nadu. During a webinar organized by The Hindu on World Diabetes Day, experts highlighted that India faces a looming diabetes crisis, with 101 million diagnosed and 130 million pre-diabetic individuals. The event emphasized the necessity for diabetics to be well-informed, collaborate with healthcare professionals, and adhere strictly to prescribed treatments instead of relying on unverified self-healing practices from social media.
R. Shanmugasundaram, a senior diabetologist from Salem, debunked various myths, stressing the importance of early detection and consistent management of diabetes, a chronic condition that often shows no symptoms. He stated that regular monitoring of blood sugar levels is essential, as diet and exercise alone are insufficient. P. Gowri from Trichy focused on Diabetic Foot Attack, urging increased awareness akin to heart and kidney issues to prevent severe complications. She advised early treatment of any foot ulcers to avert further problems.
K. Baraneedharan from Chennai discussed advancements that promise to revolutionize diabetes management, such as the real-time Glucose Monitoring System that offers continuous monitoring through a body-attached device connected to an app, as well as the development of new medications as alternatives to insulin injections. This webinar aimed to elevate public understanding of diabetes, a manageable but incurable disease, underscoring the importance of proactive health strategies for a robust and long life.
