Assam Govt’s Bold Move: Flyover Realigned to Preserve Beloved Dighalipukhuri Trees – A Triumph for Nature!
On November 13, 2024, the Assam government filed an affidavit with the Gauhati High Court, asserting its commitment to preserve the heritage trees around Dighalipukhuri pond. The flyover project initially proposed by the government was set to impact these ancient trees, prompting a public protest on October 29, 2024. In response, Chief Minister of Assam announced on social media platform ‘X’ that the government would protect the city’s heritage and the environment. Consequently, an alternative project design has been considered.
The government reassured that the modified alignment of the flyover will ensure no tree on the Dighalipukhuri banks will be harmed. It elaborated that the Public Works Department (PWD) is conducting surveys and preparatory work for the new design, pending finalization. The revised plan excludes the two original arms towards Tayabulla Road and West Dighalipukhuri Road, thus safeguarding the ancient trees. Instead, the flyover will extend from Lamb Road point to near Rabindra Bhawan on GNB Road, ensuring preservation of the surrounding environment.
The government’s affidavit also discussed efforts to evaluate the feasibility of relocating or trimming the trees, a process that ceased due to procedural requirements under the Control of Felling and Removal of Trees from Non-Forest Lands Regulation Act, 2000.
The Gauhati High Court, responding to a Public Interest Litigation filed by reporters and an activist, called for the Assam Chief Secretary to present an affidavit by November 11, 2024. The matter is set for further hearing on November 13, highlighting ongoing public and legal interest in balancing urban development with heritage conservation.
