Urgent Call: UNC Demands Immediate Rescheduling of Crucial Tripartite Talks on Manipur’s New Districts
In a recent development, the United Naga Council (UNC), the principal representative body of the Naga community in Manipur, has requested a change in schedule for the forthcoming round of tripartite talks involving the UNC, the Government of Manipur, and the Government of India. The talks, originally planned for November 13, 2024, may now be rescheduled to the fourth week of November, following a formal letter from UNC General Secretary Vareiyo Satshang to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
Satshang’s letter, addressed to MHA advisor (North East) AK Mishra, cited prior engagements of some UNC members as the reason for the proposed change. The talks, scheduled to take place in Senapati, resumed last month after a five-year hiatus, with discussions centered on the contentious creation of seven new districts in Manipur in December 2016—a move the UNC opposes and has demanded be reversed.
Since their inception in 2017, eleven rounds of discussions have been conducted with little progress. The issue escalated to the point where the UNC issued an ultimatum to Union Home Minister Amit Shah on September 11, demanding action on the matter. In an effort to foster dialogue, the UNC suspended a planned 48-hour bandh in Naga areas of Manipur earlier in October.
Despite the extended pause in dialogue, the resumption of talks has reignited hope for resolving the impasse, underscoring the longstanding tension surrounding administrative reforms in the region. The UNC’s latest request for rescheduling signifies a continued intent to engage in dialogue, emphasizing the significance of these discussions in addressing the grievances of the Naga community and fostering peace in the region.
