Brace Yourselves: Intense Downpours Set to Soak Chennai and Neighboring Districts Until November 15!
Heavy Rains Batter Chennai; Weather Alert Issued
Chennai experienced significant rainfall on Tuesday morning, leading to concerns about continued heavy showers in the region until Friday, November 15, 2024. Triggered by a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, this weather pattern prompted the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai to issue an orange alert, warning of very heavy rain up to 20.4 cm within 24 hours, specifically affecting Chennai, Tiruvallur, and Chengalpattu districts.
The deluge on Tuesday night left several areas in and around Chennai flooded, causing a holiday for schools. Perungudi reported the highest rainfall in the state, recording 8 cm. The heavy northeast monsoon activity is expected to persist until November 16, with scattered moderate rainfall on Wednesday, impacting 12 districts, including places like Madurai and Tirunelveli.
Looking ahead, rainfall is anticipated to spread to more locations by November 14, intensifying in isolated areas of 27 districts, with similar conditions persisting through November 15. Light rains around five reservoirs supplying Chennai with drinking water have increased their levels, with storage currently at nearly 45% capacity.
The Meteorological Department forecasts moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms in certain areas until Thursday, with Chennai maintaining a maximum temperature of 30°C for the next two days.
