Urgent Alert: Tensions Soar in Jiribam Amid Manipur Violence – Strict Prohibitory Orders Enforced
The situation in Manipur’s Jiribam district remains tense but stable following a gunfight that resulted in the deaths of eleven suspected militants on Monday. Security forces, including police and CRPF, are maintaining vigilance at vulnerable locations to prevent further incidents, according to officials. In response to the violence, the district administration has imposed prohibitory orders and initiated an operation to locate missing individuals.
A dawn-to-dusk shutdown took place on Tuesday in the Kuki-Zo majority areas of the hill region, protesting the deaths of the alleged insurgents. The clash occurred after militants, wearing camouflage and equipped with sophisticated weaponry, launched an unprovoked attack on a police station and a nearby CRPF camp in Jiribam. This confrontation led to a heavy firefight, injuring two CRPF personnel, with one reportedly in critical condition.
The violence has sparked further unrest in the Imphal Valley, where armed groups exchanged fire across multiple locations. The Kuki-Zo Council, expressing their sorrow and solidarity over the incident, called for the shutdown in the hill areas from 5 am to 6 pm on Tuesday. They described the killings as brutal and aimed to convey collective grief.
Suspected militants also targeted several shops and houses, setting them ablaze in the Jakurador Karong market vicinity. They continued to target Borobekra’s police station and the adjacent CRPF camp until security forces retaliated, leading to a 40-45 minute exchange of fire that resulted in the death of the 11 militants.
In response, reinforcement units comprising Assam Rifles, CRPF, and police have been deployed to the affected areas to maintain order and continue operations to apprehend or eliminate remaining militant threats. Violent clashes were also reported on Monday evening in various villages within Imphal West and Imphal East districts, indicating ongoing tension and unrest in the region.
