Exciting News: Relief Ahead with Closure of Pandeshwar Level Crossing by June 2025!
In a development set to ease traffic congestion on Mangaladevi Road and Pandeshwar, Southern Railway’s Palakkad division will halt using the Bunder Goods Shed for stabling passenger train rakes. This move will significantly reduce the frequent closures of the Pandeshwar and Hoige Bazar level crossing gates. The division is currently constructing an additional stabling line near Platform No. 5 at Mangaluru Central Station. This new line, expected to be completed in about six months, will accommodate a full-length train, thus eliminating the need to move passenger rakes to Bunder.
In a recent discussion, Dakshina Kannada MP Captain Brijesh Chowta and railway officials noted that most goods train operations have already shifted to Ullal or Panambur. The use of Bunder Yard for certain passenger trains like the MGR Chennai Central-Mangaluru Central Superfast Express remains necessary but will be minimized with the new line.
Additionally, Mangaluru City South MLA D. Vedavyas Kamath has urged the railways to avoid train movements during peak traffic hours to ease vehicular delays. By mid-2025, the goods shed will be primarily used for storing ballast, further reducing the frequency of level crossing gate closures. This project promises an improvement in commuter experience by alleviating traffic disruptions on one of the city’s main thoroughfares.
