Survival Against All Odds: Phualguri Artisans Courageously Preserve Endangered Raas Culture
As the Raas Mahotsav approaches, the artisans of Phualguri in Nagaon district are diligently preparing intricate costumes despite facing financial difficulties. Known for their craftsmanship over the decades, these artisans are vital to the festival’s success, crafting the costumes, ornaments, and accessories essential for the performances dedicated to Lord Krishna’s divine love. However, rising costs of materials and transportation from Kolkata, coupled with low profitability, are discouraging younger generations from continuing this traditional craft, leading to a decline in the number of artisans.
Tankeswar Nath, a 55-year-old artisan who learned the trade from his uncles, is among the few keeping this tradition alive. Alongside four other workers, Nath has completed around 20 pairs of costumes for this year’s performances, which are a major attraction at Raas events. Despite the challenges, such as the need to offer costumes at reduced prices to support performers and lack of financial backing, these artisans remain committed to preserving cultural heritage.
Phualguri remains a central hub during this period, attracting organizers from Nagaon, Morigaon, and Karbi Anglong districts seeking costumes for their festivities. Although the younger generations are moving away from the trade due to low profit margins, artisans like Nath continue to persevere and prepare for the festival, having started their preparations three months in advance. They demonstrate resilience and dedication to sustaining the cultural tradition, ensuring the vibrant Raas performances continue to captivate audiences year after year.
