A career guidance program was recently held on November 10 in Shillong, targeting sixty youths from the Phudmuri area. Organized by the Social and Economic Life Development Association (SELDA) of Phudmuri Presbyterian Church in collaboration with Avenues, a renowned skill training enterprise in the Northeast, the event aimed to bolster confidence, clarity, and career readiness among students from Classes 10, 11, and 12. Hosted at Phudmuri Presbyterian Higher Secondary School, the one-day workshop was led by Avenues’ skilled trainers.
The program’s modules focused on career exploration, skill mapping, and goal achievement, encouraging participants to make career decisions aligned with their personal strengths rather than just popularity or availability. Through various activities, participants explored professional sectors and learned to connect their talents and passions with viable career paths. Lakyntiew Akor Marbaniang, a Class 11 student, praised the program for enhancing her understanding of career choices, stating it helped boost her confidence and ability to dream bigger. Another participant, Iainehlang Sohtun of Class 10, highlighted the valuable lesson of time management he gained from the event.
SELDA secretary, L Shabong, emphasized the program’s role in harnessing the untapped potential of the community’s youth, remarking on the importance of guiding them towards fruitful careers for personal and communal development. Observing the interactive nature of the sessions, Shabong thanked Avenues for their efforts. E Syiem, an Assistant Teacher at the school, noted that the workshop offered an essential opportunity for students, who often face confusion about their future paths, to engage in meaningful career planning.
Avenues has been offering career readiness programs across the region since 2003, aiming to equip young individuals with the skills necessary for personal and professional success.
