Pakistan’s Bold Move: PCB Seeks Government Help After India’s Shock Decision for Champions Trophy 2025
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is seeking guidance from its government after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed India would not participate in the Champions Trophy scheduled in Pakistan next February, citing a directive from the Indian government. The International Cricket Council (ICC) relayed this decision to the PCB, which has prompted the PCB to consult its federal government for a response. The tournament marks Pakistan’s first time hosting an ICC event since 1996.
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who also serves as Pakistan’s interior minister, has dismissed the idea of employing a hybrid hosting model, which was used during the 2023 Asia Cup, where India played its matches outside Pakistan. Naqvi’s stance implies a firm insistence on hosting the entire tournament within Pakistan, paralleling the necessity for the PCB to align with its government’s directive.
This decision presents a challenging scenario for the ICC with only 100 days remaining before the tournament’s start. The longstanding India-Pakistan rivalry, a significant draw at global cricket events, adds complexity, particularly given the political dynamics—Naqvi’s BCCI counterpart, Jay Shah, is the son of Amit Shah, India’s home minister. Shah is set to become the ICC chair on December 1, potentially complicating the situation further.
The PCB has postponed an event in Lahore to launch the tournament’s schedule amid these developments. They are pressing the ICC for formal clarification from the BCCI regarding India’s reasons for withdrawal. The absence of either India or Pakistan from the Champions Trophy could significantly impact broadcast rights and the cricket ecosystem, as emphasized by ECB chief executive Richard Gould.
As it stands, the Champions Trophy is slated for February 19 to March 9, with matches in Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi, where stadiums are being prepared for the event. Pakistan, the defending champions from 2017, faces uncertainty over participation in future ICC events if tensions continue.
