Devastating 6.8 Magnitude Earthquake Shocks Cuba After Hurricanes and Blackouts
Residents in the town of Alquizar, in Cuba’s Artemisa province, sift through the wreckage of their homes following the devastation left by Hurricane Rafael on November 7, 2024. The hurricane was part of a series of severe weather events affecting Cuba, with a 6.8 magnitude earthquake later striking the eastern region of the island. The earthquake’s epicenter was located about 25 miles south of Bartolomé Masó in eastern Cuba, according to the United States Geological Survey. While the tremors were felt in major cities like Santiago de Cuba, there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
Yolanda Tabío, a 76-year-old resident of Santiago, recounted how the quake sent people running into the streets, with some experiencing aftershocks. Despite the unsettling event, she reported no damage among friends and family. This earthquake adds to the recent woes in Cuba, which has been battling the impacts of multiple hurricanes and extended power outages.
Just days prior, Hurricane Rafael, a Category 3 storm, wreaked havoc in western Cuba, leading to widespread power cuts, home destructions, and mass evacuations. The island is still grappling with power loss after the storm’s passage. October posed additional challenges, as Cuba suffered from extensive blackouts tied to its ongoing energy crisis, followed by another powerful hurricane that battered the eastern regions and claimed at least six lives.
These calamities have exacerbated frustrations among the populace, leading to minor protests amid the struggle for survival. As residents await recovery, the island’s future remains clouded by an uncertain recovery process.
