Arunachal’s Mebo Eco-Tour Team Thrilled by Transformative Eco-Tourism Insights at Kaziranga National Park
A dedicated eco-tourism delegation from the 39th Mebo Assembly Constituency, comprising Head Gaon Burahs, Gaon Burahs, village secretaries, and cleanliness mission leaders, recently returned from an insightful two-day visit to Kaziranga National Park in Assam. The initiative, held from November 7 to November 9, focused on learning about eco-tourism practices and wildlife conservation strategies to implement similar models in their home region around the D. Ering Wildlife Sanctuary in East Siang District.
Flagged off by Mebo MLA Oken Tayeng, the tour aimed to integrate eco-tourism, home-stays, and wildlife preservation in local villages, including Sigar, Motum, Borguli, Seram, and Namsing. Extra Assistant Commissioner Toni Mitkong, along with village authorities and military personnel from Sigar Military Station, joined the delegation, which traveled by bus to Kaziranga, the trip being sponsored by the military station in a display of civil-military cooperation.
During the excursion, attendees explored Kaziranga’s successful eco-tourism model, understanding its economic and environmental impacts. Notable figures such as Kalom Lego and Tikeng Perme expressed optimism that the experience would inspire villagers to adopt similar strategies, emphasizing the benefits to the local economy and environment.
Upon their return, delegates proposed adapting Kaziranga’s model to the D. Ering Wildlife Sanctuary. This includes resolving boundary issues and implementing sustainable tourism initiatives. The exposure visit also highlighted the positive impact on local communities, such as the Karbi people, showcasing the socio-economic benefits of eco-tourism.
A unique aspect of the trip was participating in Kaziranga’s celebration of the Adi tribe’s Pimey festival, reflecting a pivot from hunting to conservation. Additionally, a plantation program at Kaziranga’s Bagori Range saw delegates and forest officials collaboratively plant Ketir Momir and Burmese grape saplings, an initiative supported by Kaziranga’s Field Director, Ms. Sonali Ghosh. The program strengthened environmental ties with local NGOs like Aaranyak, ensuring ongoing stewardship of the region’s natural resources.
