Shocking Crackdown: Bangladesh Army Detains Hundreds of Awami League Activists Before Major Protest
Hundreds of Awami League supporters and workers have been arrested by the Bangladesh Army in response to a planned protest in Dhaka on November 10. The demonstration is directed against the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, with additional reinforcement of 191 platoons from the Border Guard Bangladesh deployed throughout the city and other regions.
The scheduled protest was denied permission by the authorities, who labeled the Awami League as a “fascist party” and voiced a zero-tolerance policy towards any violent actions or disruptions. Muhammad Yunus’s administration has firmly stated that anyone attempting rallies or gatherings will face legal action.
The Awami League had planned to assemble in key areas like Gulisthan, Zero Point, and Nur Hossain Square to protest against the alleged unjust framing of their leaders, the banishment of the student wing Chatra League, and persecution of their workers. This comes in the wake of the party’s crackdown after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted and went into exile on August 5, following violent protests led by Khaleda Zia’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Jamaat-e-Islami, and other factions.
The BNP and Jamaat have declared they will prevent any Awami League gatherings, with their workers occupying critical protest sites, including Gulistan and the Awami League headquarters. This preemptive occupation aims to thwart any organization efforts by Awami League supporters.
The Awami League claims their protests aim to uphold the rights of Bangladeshi citizens and counter the rise of fundamentalist forces. As tensions escalate, the situation in Bangladesh remains precarious, with both sides standing firm amidst a climate of political unrest and heightened security measures.
