India Triumphantly Secures Host Country Agreement for Transformative BIMSTEC Energy Centre
India has formalized a crucial pact to establish the BIMSTEC Energy Centre in Bengaluru, boosting energy collaboration in the Bay of Bengal and its coastal vicinity. The Host Country Agreement was signed by Secretary East Jaideep Mazumder and BIMSTEC Secretary General Indra Mani Pandey. This initiative aims to strengthen energy cooperation, specifically through inter-grid connectivity among the BIMSTEC nations.
The energy center, planned to be located within the Central Power Research Institute premises in Bengaluru, will also serve as the Secretariat for the BIMSTEC Grid Interconnection Coordination Committee. This development follows India’s hosting of the inaugural Governing Board meeting of the BIMSTEC Energy Centre (BEC) in February 2023, which saw the active participation of all BIMSTEC nations—Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand—alongside the BIMSTEC Secretariat.
The Energy Centre’s objectives include bolstering cooperation in the energy sector, fostering experience sharing and capacity building, managing energy-related data, and facilitating communication among national institutions. It will also conduct feasibility studies for projects within the region and enhance policy study and dissemination efforts.
BIMSTEC, the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation, unites seven countries from South and Southeast Asia, encompassing a population of 1.73 billion and a GDP of USD 5.2 trillion. The forum addresses key sectors like security, connectivity, and trade, akin to SAARC, with a focus on establishing a free trade agreement. Despite having a rotating leadership, its permanent secretariat is based in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Earlier this year, the foreign ministers of the BIMSTEC countries met in New Delhi to discuss issues related to security, connectivity, and economic ties, underlining the organization’s commitment to fostering regional cooperation since its inception on June 6, 1997.
