Empowering Tripura: A Transformative Journey Towards Self-Reliance in Healthcare
The Tripura government is committed to enhancing its healthcare infrastructure, aiming for the state’s self-reliance in medical services, according to Chief Minister Manik Saha. Speaking at the 18th annual state conference of the Association of Surgeons of India (Tripura Chapter) on November 9, Saha stressed healthcare as a vital state asset, with efforts to build high-quality hospitals and improve healthcare delivery diligently underway.
The state, under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is striving to bolster its healthcare sector by increasing the availability of specialists and super-specialists, transforming what was once unthinkable. In the past six years, modernization has enabled advanced medical procedures to be performed locally, reducing the dependency on external treatments.
Eight organizations have shown interest in establishing high-standard hospitals in Agartala, backed by strategic land allocations from the government, although these hospitals must independently recruit their medical staff. The broader vision involves a medical hub in Tripura, integrating allopathic, homoeopathic, and ayurvedic healthcare.
The state’s medical education is also set for expansion, with three medical colleges offering nearly 400 MBBS seats and a government dental college providing 63 seats. Recent additions include a dialysis unit and a female medicine ward. Tripura’s medical faculty maintains high quality, evidenced by students’ outstanding results. Notably, kidney transplants are now feasible in the state, with future plans for liver transplants.
Proposals from Seha Hospital in Manipur for a Rs. 700 crore hospital and medical college are pending cabinet approval. Further healthcare expansions include trauma care centers in Shantirbazar, Udaipur, and Ambassa, with plans for North Tripura, and newly inaugurated cardiac and de-addiction centers across districts.
The AGMC offers 85 PG course seats across 20 departments, and bed capacity at Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital has increased from 727 to 1,413. The Chief Minister confirmed additional healthcare investments with Rs 515 crore allocated by the Ministry of Development of the North Eastern Region for varied health projects in Tripura.
