Furious Protesters Demand Justice: Intense Clash with Police in Tinsukia Over Tribal Status
Tinsukia witnessed escalating tensions as a protest led by the All Moran Students’ Union and the All Assam Motok Youth Students’ Federation turned violent. The demonstrators, demanding tribal status for the Moran-Motok community, clashed with police when security forces intervened to maintain order by dispersing the crowd with tear gas. This action allegedly aimed to prevent the symbolic burning of effigies, which intensified the situation.
The incident centered around allegations against ASI Shankar Das of the Tinsukia Sadar Police Station. The student unions accused Das of excessive use of force and inappropriate conduct during the protest. In response, they have issued a strong ultimatum demanding immediate disciplinary action against him. The unions warned that if their demands are not met within 24 hours, a district-wide bandh (shutdown) will be enforced in Tinsukia on November 10. This bandh is intended to protest against what they describe as a violation of their right to peacefully protest.
The situation remains tense as the community awaits a response regarding potential disciplinary measures against the police official. The possibility of the protest escalating into a shutdown could significantly disrupt normal activities in the district. All eyes are now on the authorities to see how they will address the allegations and whether they will take action to de-escalate the situation before the looming shutdown on Sunday.
