SHILLONG, Nov 8: Efforts to address pressing student concerns at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) faced challenges as an Executive Council meeting convened by Vice Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla was disrupted, preventing any progress on Friday. The meeting aimed to engage with grievances raised by the NEHUSU, specifically the call for the removal of the Registrar and Deputy Registrar and the appointment of Pro-Vice Chancellors for the Shillong and Tura campuses.
Vice Chancellor Shukla expressed his earnest concerns regarding the ongoing student hunger strike, highlighting the potential health risks it poses. “I tried to speak directly with the students to address their concerns and urged them to end their hunger strike, as I am deeply concerned about their health. However, safety advice from the magistrate prevented me from visiting certain areas,” Shukla noted.
Despite these constraints, Prof. Shukla remains committed to resolving the issues and advocates for open dialogue. He emphasized the need for constructive discussions, stating, “Without dialogue, my hands are tied.” His appeal to the students was both direct and empathetic, urging them to abandon the hunger strike in favor of collaborative efforts towards solutions.
