Urgent Dialogue: Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma to Address ILP Concerns with Pressure Groups Amid Rising Clamor
First Published: July 18, 2024, 22:03 IST
In a significant development, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has invited pressure groups such as the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) for a crucial discussion scheduled for tomorrow. The meeting is prompted by the voluntary establishment of check gates by these groups at multiple entry points to scrutinize work permits and prevent the influx of outsiders into the state.
East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah communicated the Chief Minister’s invitation to the KSU general secretary, Donald V Thabah, stating that the meeting will take place in the Chief Minister’s office chamber on July 19 at 12 pm.
Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh addressed media queries earlier, emphasizing that the demand for Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the state—a long-standing issue—will likely be a major topic in the discussions. He remarked, “This issue has continuously attracted government attention, and the state assembly has even adopted a resolution advocating the implementation of ILP. We need collective effort to resolve this matter.”
Lyngdoh expressed optimism that the discussions would yield productive and substantial outcomes. He stressed the importance of collaboration, stating, “It should not be the Government of Meghalaya versus the NGOs, but rather both working together to find a lasting solution.”
In recent weeks, pressure groups intensified their actions by setting up check gates in Ri Bhoi district and East Jaintia Hills, inspecting the documents of individuals entering and working in Meghalaya. There have also been troubling reports of violence against workers from outside the state, with incidents of beatings and killings by unidentified assailants.
The upcoming meeting between the Chief Minister and the KSU is expected to address these urgent matters and work towards a harmonious and effective resolution.
