Urgent: Civic Heroes Battle to Secure Crucial Central Funds for Edakochi STP’s Future
The Kochi Corporation is urgently working to complete the Edakochi Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) before the December 31 deadline to avoid losing Central funding. This ₹18.6-crore project, part of the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), risks losing ₹7.75 crore if not finished on time. Currently, only 40% of the work is completed due to initial delays caused by public protests. After extensive discussions, the project finally commenced.
The Corporation plans to request an extension from AMRUT authorities while simultaneously ensuring the Central funds are utilized to prevent them from lapsing. Road restoration related to the project will consume around ₹6.5 crore from the Central share, which the Corporation has already secured in advance, thus safeguarding a substantial portion of the funding.
The Edakochi STP, the first standalone sewage treatment facility in Kochi, will serve nearly 2,200 households in Division 16, with the capability of recycling water for construction use. The project highlights the Corporation’s commitment to urban development and environmental sustainability.
