United for Health: Transformative Fourth Lusophone Summit to Eradicate HIV, Hepatitis, STIs, and TB
The World Health Organization (WHO) is set to host a pivotal virtual meeting for Lusophone countries on November 6, 2024, following previous gatherings in Cabo Verde (2014), Mozambique (2016), and Brazil (2024). This upcoming session invites country focal points and civil society representatives to focus on enhancing collaborative efforts towards eradicating HIV, hepatitis, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and tuberculosis (TB) as public health threats by 2030. With no registration required, participants can join using access code Lhm5Bw.
The meeting will be divided into two parts. Part one will concentrate on sharing insights from the Brasília meeting held in March 2024. Key presentations by Clarice Pinto and Carlota Batista from WHO’s Health and Human Services (HHS) will outline collaboration plans among Portuguese-speaking countries, emphasizing the development of an information repository and a series of webinars for 2025. Part two aims at advancing the processes necessary to validate the elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B, featuring contributions from Leandro Sereno from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and health ministry representatives from the Lusophone nations.
The agenda begins with an introductory session led by Marco Vitória of WHO HHS. This will be followed by an overview of the main results from the Brasília meeting, and insights into proactive collaboration activities planned for 2025. It will culminate with discussions on the advancement of processes to combat mother-to-child disease transmission, before concluding with a session outlining the next steps, led by Vitória, Pinto, and Batista. This structured forum aims to bolster coordinated health initiatives and reinforce efforts to meet the 2030 health objectives for the Lusophone world.
