Transformative Milestone: Empowering Telangana with the Groundbreaking Caste Census Initiative
In Hyderabad, Telangana’s Backward Classes Welfare Minister, Ponnam Prabhakar, initiated an extensive door-to-door survey on November 6, 2024, at the GHMC office. The survey, conducted by the State Planning Department, aims to evaluate the social, economic, political, caste, and educational status of households throughout the state. The last caste census was carried out in 1931.
A team of 85,000 enumerators is set to collect data from 1.17 crore houses. These enumerators, each responsible for 150 homes, will start the survey on November 9. They will gather comprehensive details, including individual and family information, religious and caste affiliations, marital status, and optional Aadhaar card numbers. They will also inquire about sources of income, employment status, annual income, business turnover, tax-paying status, and bank account holdings.
The survey will delve into caste-based occupations and associated health hazards, along with benefits received from reservations and welfare schemes over the past five years. Caste certificates will be collected from SC/ST/BC/EWS respondents and members of Denotified Tribes. To mark visited homes, enumerators will place stickers on doors.
Mr. Prabhakar has reassured the public about the confidentiality of the data and has invited the opposition to offer feedback if any issues arise. This monumental task aims to provide a detailed socio-economic and caste profile to aid in future planning and policy-making.
