Furious Raijor Dal Youths Ignite Protest Against Mega Dam Projects in Assam, Burning Effigies of PM Modi
In a spirited demonstration today, the youth wing of Raijor Dal staged a protest in Assam’s Lakhimpur district to voice their strong opposition to the proposed construction of 135 dam projects in neighboring Arunachal Pradesh. Spearheaded by the Lakhimpur District Committee of the party, the protesters articulated their objections by setting alight effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.
The demonstration was ignited by plans to advance large-scale hydroelectric projects, including the 2,220 MW Oju Hydro Electric Project, the 2,000 MW Kamala Hydroelectric Project, the 2,500 MW Upper Subansiri Project, and the massive 12,000 MW Upper Siang Hydroelectric Project. According to the youth leaders of Raijor Dal, these developments threaten to significantly disrupt the region’s delicate ecology and displace indigenous communities, posing serious risks to both the natural environment and local livelihoods.
The youth wing emphasized the need to protect the area’s biodiversity and the cultural heritage of its inhabitants. Concerns over potential ecological imbalance and the socio-economic upheaval that may follow were at the forefront of the protestors’ agenda. They argued that the execution of these projects could lead to irreversible damage, which calls for urgent reconsideration by the government.
This protest reflects a growing unease among local communities about the environmental impacts of aggressive industrial projects, urging for sustainable approaches that consider both development and ecological conservation. Amidst the protests, there is a strong plea for authorities to prioritize the voices and well-being of the affected communities. This sentiment echoes broader movements within India advocating for socially and environmentally responsible development practices.
In related news, a spirit of communal cooperation was recently witnessed in Assam as villagers in Boko came together to construct a temporary bamboo bridge over the Singra river, highlighting the strength and resilience of local communities in addressing infrastructure challenges.
