Life-Changing Relief: Education Department Forgives $1.2 Billion in PSLF Student Debt
In a significant move to ease the financial burden of student debt, the Biden administration announced on Thursday the cancellation of $1.2 billion in student loans for 35,000 public service workers. The initiative is part of broader efforts to rectify flaws in a popular debt relief program for public service employees.
“Once again, the Biden-Harris administration delivers on its historic efforts to reduce the burden of student debt — making needed and long overdue improvements to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program,” remarked U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona.
The Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program, established in 2007 under President George W. Bush, was designed to forgive federal student loans for employees in certain nonprofit and government roles after ten years of qualifying payments. However, the program has faced significant challenges, often leaving qualified borrowers without the promised relief due to technical issues like loan types and repayment plans.
In response, the Biden administration provided a second chance for many borrowers by allowing them to consolidate loans and receive credit for previously ineligible payment periods. This effort included a special waiver that expired in October 2022.
Since President Joe Biden’s tenure began, the Department of Education has forgiven $69.2 billion in student debt for 946,000 borrowers under the PSLF program. This marks a dramatic increase compared to the mere 7,000 beneficiaries who had obtained relief before Biden took office.
This announcement underscores the administration’s commitment to alleviating student debt burdens and reforming the PSLF program to better serve public service workers.
