Urgent Appeal: Anti-CAA Group Demands Justice with Release of Final NRC Draft
The Coordination Committee Against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Assam has called for the Registrar General of India (RGI) to release the final draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC). Although the final draft was submitted in 2019, its publication has been stalled due to ongoing legal issues and objections. The committee argues that making the NRC public is essential for addressing the concerns of illegal immigration in Assam.
In expressing contentment, the committee thanked the Supreme Court for upholding Clause 6A of the Citizenship Act, 1955, which establishes the cut-off date for citizenship at March 25, 1971. This clause is seen as pivotal in differentiating between citizens and illegal immigrants in the state.
Despite this legal backing, the committee voiced concerns about the practical implementation of the NRC and the subsequent deportation processes for illegal immigrants. They urge prompt action to alleviate these issues, reinforcing the need for the NRC’s timely publication to assist in the broader framework for identifying and managing immigration effectively.
In related news from the region, Diwali celebrations in Jorhat, Assam, turned tragic with a massive fire, resulting in a fatality. Meanwhile, in Meghalaya, two new community reserves have been established, highlighting ongoing environmental conservation efforts in the Northeast.
