Dynamic Engagement: Union Minister Kiren Rijiju’s Strategic Interaction with Chinese Soldiers in Tawang Sparks Optimism
Union Minister for Parliamentary and Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju met with Chinese soldiers near the Sino-Indian border in Tawang during a Diwali visit to an Indian Army post, highlighting a rare display of diplomacy between the two nations’ forces along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). This interaction, captured in a video shared on social media, occurred amidst improving diplomatic relations between India and China following years of heightened tensions along the border.
During the visit, Rijiju, who is from Arunachal Pradesh, exchanged greetings with three members of China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) through an interpreter. He asked them about their experience serving at the high-altitude post approximately 15,000 feet above sea level. The Chinese soldiers reported no issues, indicating they were well-acclimated to the challenging environment. Rijiju shared this interaction on X, formerly Twitter, expressing pride in India’s border infrastructure and development.
In addition to his diplomatic engagement, Rijiju celebrated Diwali with Indian troops at the border, emphasizing the government’s commitment to supporting soldiers stationed far from home. “Since you are far away from home during Diwali, we have also decided to be away from home and spend time with you,” Rijiju told the troops, acknowledging their sacrifice in serving in such remote conditions.
This year’s Diwali celebrations also included the exchange of sweets between Indian and Chinese troops at multiple points along the LAC, promoting goodwill alongside progress in border disengagement efforts. Recently, both countries achieved disengagement at key friction points in eastern Ladakh, including the Demchok and Depsang Plains areas, signaling mutual commitment to peaceful coexistence along the border.
