Renowned economist and chairman of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council (EAC-PM), Bibek Debroy, passed away on Friday morning in New Delhi. His demise closes a significant chapter in the realms of economics, policy-making, and Sanskrit scholarship, a career marked by profound contributions and intellectual rigor.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded Debroy as “a towering scholar” whose scholarly work has left a lasting imprint on India’s intellectual landscape. Modi expressed his condolences, highlighting the enduring impact Debroy had through his writings and insights.

Debroy’s academic foundation was laid at the Ramakrishna Mission School, Narendrapur, after which he pursued further studies at prestigious institutions like Presidency College, Kolkata, Delhi School of Economics, and Trinity College, Cambridge. His professional journey saw him imparting knowledge at esteemed institutions like Presidency College and the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics.
As chairman of the EAC-PM and a former member of the NITI Aayog, Debroy was instrumental in influencing and crafting India’s economic framework. His expertise covered a broad range of areas including macroeconomics, public finance, and infrastructure development, significantly shaping economic policies.
Debroy’s talents extended beyond economics; he was acclaimed for translating classical Sanskrit texts, such as the entire Mahabharata and the Bhagavad Gita, thereby making ancient Indian literature accessible to modern audiences.
His career also included roles as a consulting editor for several newspapers and as the director of a Ministry of Finance/UNDP project focused on legal reforms.
