Celebrated Veteran Journalist from Meghalaya Receives Prestigious State Honor for 40 Years of Inspiring Media Service
On October 31, Meghalaya honored independent journalist Francis A. Khongwar for his remarkable 40-year contribution to regional journalism. This recognition was part of a broader initiative by the state to honor seasoned journalists. Chief Secretary DP Wahlang presented Khongwar with a cheque of Rs 1 lakh as a token of appreciation, acknowledging his tireless efforts and dedication to the field.
Khongwar’s journalism career began in 1984 when he took on the role of a reporter for the Khasi weekly “Dongmusa.” His journey then led him to the Shillong bureau of the Press Trust of India, where he worked as a Transmission Operator. Over the years, he has contributed to several esteemed publications, including Apphira, Nation Builder, Mawphor, and Kynjat Shai. Despite the decades gone by, Khongwar remains an active figure in journalism, steadfast in his commitment to keeping the state’s citizens informed about crucial issues.
This award is part of a larger recognition effort, during which eight senior journalists were honored at the Meghalaya Media Meet 2024. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma announced special grants of Rs 1 lakh each for these journalism veterans, channeling funds through the Directorate of Information and Public Relations. These accolades highlight the pivotal role experienced journalists play in shaping public discourse and ensuring an informed public in Meghalaya.
Khongwar’s recognition underscores the importance of seasoned journalists who have consistently contributed to the region’s media landscape, helping to shape narratives and engage the public with critical discourse. Such initiatives reflect a commitment to honoring journalistic integrity and encouraging the vital role of journalism in fostering an informed society. As media continues to evolve, the dedication of journalists like Khongwar remains a cornerstone of enlightening public awareness and fostering informed communities.
