Exciting News: Nagaland Cabinet Proudly Elevates Meluri Sub-Division as the 17th District!
The Nagaland Cabinet has approved the creation of a new district, Meluri, by dividing Phek district, catering to the needs and aspirations of the Pochury community. This decision was made during a cabinet meeting chaired by Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, addressing the Pochury people’s long-standing demand for administrative autonomy. KG Kenye, the Power and Parliamentary Affairs Minister and state government spokesperson, confirmed that Meluri would soon become a reality, fulfilling the aspirations of the Pochury Naga tribe and aligning with the state’s commitment to equitable development across Nagaland.
Meluri, which will be Nagaland’s 17th district, marks the fifth district created in the last three years. Previously, the government initiated significant administrative restructuring by creating Tseminyu, Chumoukedima, and Niuland from Dimapur district in December 2021, followed by Shamator from Tuensang district in January 2022.
The Meluri sub-division spans 1,011 square kilometers and includes 31 recognized villages and four administrative headquarters. The Pochury Hoho, the apex body representing the Pochury tribe, celebrated this decision as a “red letter day,” expressing gratitude to Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, his cabinet colleagues, and the local MLA for their support in realizing Meluri district.
Additionally, the Naga People’s Front (NPF) welcomed the decision to upgrade Meluri. They acknowledged the immense contributions of MLA Z Nyusietho Nyuthe from the 20 Meluri assembly constituency, whose persistent efforts played a crucial role in fulfilling the aspirations of the Pochury people and facilitating the creation of the new district.
This development marks a significant step towards recognizing the unique needs of the Pochury community and ensuring equitable growth across the state of Nagaland.
